Right Royal Flexible Volunteering

<Man thumbs through a copy of Hello Magazine>

By Jove I have got it if we use a Royal that will show that anyone can be a leader

<Smiles to himself>

You will hopefully be aware of yesterday Big News from the Scout Association, if you not then HRH The Duchess of Cambridge is to join the Scout Association as a Volunteer,

The Scout Association says

 The announcement comes as a great endorsement of Scouting’s commitment to allow adults to volunteer their time on a flexible basis. The Duchess will help run a variety of activities relevant to her skills and interests. This could include running games, teaching first aid or cooking on campfires.

So what are my thoughts on this news, well I am torn

On one hand this is a very positive story about a high profile member of the royal family showing support for the Scout Association, while also giving a big boost to flexible volunteering and showing that if she can give some time to fit scouting in to her busy lifestyle then anyone can.

However on the other hand I have some concerns.

Scouting is often looked at as a social leveller, it was part of what BP did by taking boys from both classes to Brownsea island. As such what then happens to royal protocol – do her fellow leaders call her Kate or maybe she will take a name like Squirrel (for beavers) or Winifred for cubs (Winifred is Colonel Hathi’s wife, after all William is a colonel in the Irish Guards) or as protocol decrees is it Your Royal Highness followed by Ma’am?

My second thought is to the pack – the disruption that is likely to be caused that first time she arrives with the press clambering to get photos, that is not going to be easy; when Prince Andrew joined Cubs they moved the meetings into the Grounds of Buckingham Palase which allowed it some resemblance of normality

Finally though what’s going to happen if the press get a photo of The Duchess helping out little Jonny or Jenny and the pack does not have a signed form allowing the use of photos or maybe the parent has decide they don’t want photos of the child used and has informed the group. Are the pressgoing to check with the group before publishing every photo? They are not known for their consideration on these matters.

To wrap up

My concerns are, I will admit, very minor and on the whole it is very positive having some one like the Dutchess of Cambridge being part of the Scout Association in any form.  I also feel that the felxible voloutering which the Scout Association offers is  a great way for people to support the movement with as much or a little time as they have.

I hope that the group where she volunteers will be given the support throughout the full three years (if that is what she is doing) of Her Royal Highnesses appointment not just while there is a lot of media hype.

Do we really need an app

<Email pings>

Mmm….. That is interesting

<Reads first line>

<Files it to do later>

That is usually me on Friday when I get the scouting+ email land in my inbox. However this Friday I saw those golden words IPhone App I clicked further into the message to find out was was going on.
Now I am the first to admit I am a bit of an apple fan, I have an IPhone I write my blog posts on an Apple Mac so when I saw the app I was heading straight for the store to download it….

Then suddenly <screeching of wheels> I had to pay for it, with my finger hovering over the buy button I was thinking it is only £1.19. Then it hit me I have this information already on my phone for free why should I buy the app.

Whilst browsing the net I came across the Sutton District Scouting Website and from there I downloaded from the badge requirements site the explorer badge book as an indexed PDF. Once downloaded I added it my library of books so I can refer to it at anytime. They also have badge books for all the other sections as well. I have also got and Indexed copy of POR .

I am not an Android user, however I am not sure you must be able to do something similar with a PDF on an android. If not you could

  1. buy an IPhone
  2. add it to google docs I suppose.

So I guess my question for everyone is – if the information is out there available to all free should the Scout Association have spent the money on developing the App on something else.

Why do they Do it

Hello Dear Reader

abf If you are on twitter and follow @UKScouting you will have seen the tweet on Friday

Waiting for a very high profile media event to start in South London. More information real soon

as many people tried to work out where and what UK scouting were up to  the talk of scouting built and eventually once told by @UKScouting, it was clear they were with Prince Harry and Bear Grylls promoting the Soldiers Challenge.

The adventure race, to be held in London on 26 March 2011, aims to give people the opportunity to tackle a range of high adrenaline tasks around the capital, while at the same time raising money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

Officially launching registrations for the event, at the Imperial War Museum in Southwark, Prince Harry showed off his military training by joining serving soldiers and Bear Grylls alongside Explorer Scouts and Scout Network members in taking a look at some of the tasks the Soldier Challenge will offer. The Prince also took time to hear more about the work of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and as well as meeting some of its beneficiaries.

More info about the scouting involvement is here and the Soldier Challenge website.

All this is great publicity for scouting however in among all this there is always one news paper and it is usually a Redtop that as to put a whole new spin. I am not going to give them the pleasure of getting readership from my website so you will need to find that article yourself.

But in a story about fundraising for a good course they want to talk about the fact that Prince Harry chose to wear Pink Boxers it beggars belief
