I'm coming at this from across the pond, I'm a Cub Scout leader in the BSA.

I'd love to see all of my kids, the boys and girl all be able to scout together in the same organization. However, In the US, The BSA is far larger than the Girl Scouts. If there was to be a merger, the BSA would be the larger organization, and it's the one I'm more comfortable with.

It's hard to say how I would feel if the organization I was most comfortable with was the smaller of the two.

I would say no, the two organisations are both very different with different aims. That doesn't mean they can't collaborate on things though.

I like this idea, it's very good. I agree with points on both sides of the argument. But I would have to plump for saying that the two organisations should stay separate. For a couple of reasons, firstly, seriously why should the organisations join. Each organisation caters for the needs of its members adequately, why must we follow society convention in merging everything into one in the belief that equality/ or equal opportunities to everything is the way things should be. Both organisations have lasted for over 100 years, yet neither is faltering in programme or numbers.

Secondly I don't really see any benefit for either organisation in merging, if anything it would have the opposite effect and would seem like two parties having to merge in order to survive. Plus merging just wouldn't work, knowing how so many Scouter's are so insular and I know there is a percentage that don't like having girls in Scouting. It would just end up with splits in both organisations and members young and old leaving. Why does society always feel the need to change the status quo, if it's not broken why fix it, you can create problems or make a problem worse.

P.S. Kiff, Scouter's do look good in pale blue uniforms. As a Sea Scouter with a very large shirt, it does look good on me.

I like the new site design, very clean and simple. Looks good. I agree about the picture slider at the top, on some sites they really work, and on others it's better just to have one fantastic fixed image. I think with the slider it depends how quickly the images change and do the pictures change in a smooth scroll. Anyway great site as usual, keep up the good work.

There's nothing wrong with a little post photo manipulation. Sometimes cameras don't let you capture as it was.

I agree that having Kate as a volunteer will help create some awareness. But this kind of thing isn't what recruits leaders or helpers, would it have enticed you if you weren't already in Scouting? Probably not, it wouldn't me. The recruitment of leaders has been a problem since scouting began, it hasn't been solved in that time and it won't ever be solved unless you have a shift in society. I quite admire the american model of society, where people are celebrated or praised by society for giving their time. Where workplaces offer time off to volunteers because it brings rewards back to the company with loyalty and improved image. In this country, many are mocked by work mates for Scouting, people see it as skiving off. Society in this country don't doesn't see the benefits of volunteering to it, and until then the situation will never change. That is why I believe in going out and targeting specific people to join as leaders, my wife and I have recruited 12 leaders in just a couple of years. A bit like your example, work out your problem and then go out and get someone to solve it.
