I have and I have always thought about it as being around the adult support, being able to offer adults who work on shifts or could only give their support one weekend a month the opportunity to support the movement.

Traveling Games

<The car swerves across the road> Drat that was 126 not 26 <Driver thinks I really should pay more attention to the road> -0000- I am wondering if people have any good traveling games, I don’t mean like travel twister I mean car or train games. I currently undertake a 170 mile journey every monday morning and every Friday evening as I cross the country from Gloucestershire to Essex and back. I have recently been playing a couple of number plate games to help pass the time. Game 1 – Numbers This is really a counting game you start at 1 and once you see a number plate with the number 1 you move on the 2 then 3 and so on. Rules 1) the number must be a sole number e.g. W1NKR can be used as number 1 and WA51KNR can not it would be used as 51 2) [...]

Asking For Help

have seen this a couple of time and been a culprit of it as well. You speak to a GSL or DC/ADC and they say “how are things going” you respond with “yes they are going well, we could do with more leaders but who couldn’t”

This is not you asking for help people will see this as a stock response or as a joke to break the tension.

If you struggling say so, ok maybe not

“Well, I am on my own, I have not seen the GSL for months, the young people have toasted marshmallows on sticks for the last I don’t know how many meetings, my wife is about to leave me I am going to get fired because I spend more time photocopying permission forms than working, oh and if I have not had two double vodkas by 10:00 I can’t cope with the day”

I have always found that this meeting is a difficult one, you want to get the scouts to think about what activities they would like to do in up coming year however it is also the first night back, so you want the meeting to be fun. Sometimes combining the two items does not always work. However this Thursday we seemed to get it right. I tried something a little different. Gave each patrol leader a marker pen and a pad of large post-it notes (called Meeting Notes), then on three of the four Walls of the scout hut, in chalk, I wrote Activity, Camp and Scout skill. Told the scouts we wanted to see at least two ideas [...]
